Commissioner
Wayne Herbert
I am truly honored and humbled to be elected as a commissioner, and to work for the wonderful citizens of Swansboro. The Marine Corps brought me from New Orleans to Swansboro in 1994 where I met my wife, who was born and raised here. Her grandfather was born on Water Street in 1905. Our son attended Swansboro schools and graduated from NCSU. We have lived in the Oyster Bay subdivision, with many wonderful friends and families, since 2002.
My combined time of service as an enlisted Marine and Officer spans 23 years. My duties included leading Marines, planning, training and budgeting. Twice I deployed from Swansboro in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I earned a M.S. in Systems Management from the Naval Postgraduate School and served as an instructor at our aviation weapons & tactics squadron. After retirement I joined the Civil Service workforce where I have worked for over 12 years. I am currently the Aviation Plans & Policy Branch Head where I manage a budget of over $20 million dollars in support of flight operations at three separate air stations. I am also a Senior Watch Officer for the Camp Lejeune Emergency Operations Center.
I was previously a member of our Parks & Recreation Board, served as the American Legion Post 78 baseball coordinator, and volunteered as a coach with our local Swansboro Baseball & Softball Association.
My family loves spending time relaxing with friends on our waterways, with our toes in the sand, and enjoying everything our coastal community offers (which includes the best local seafood). I look forward to representing our town residents like they deserve to be represented – with respect, integrity, and transparency. My goal is simple: to help facilitate a safe and economically vibrant town, that retains its historic charm and character, while providing essential services in support of our quality of life.
